It’s so good they made it into a movie. Welcome to the latest version of Willy Russell’s classic one-handed play Shirley Valentine. Scouser Shirley is 42 years old. She is bored, frustrated, and has lost the meaning of life. Her kids have left home and her husband Joe treats her like a servant. When her lively mate Jane wins tickets for a holiday in Greece and asks Shirley to accompany her, she says yes. She quietly packs her bags and leaves Joe a note. In Greece Jane disappears for a holiday romance, leaving Shirley on her own. When she meets Costas, life begins to get interesting. Will Shirley rediscover her joy in life and find herself once more?
The Olivier Award-winning actress Sheridan Smith stars as Shirley, returning to the West End and on stage at the Duke of York’s Theatre. She won Olivier awards for her work in Legally Blonde and Flare Path, as well as delighting audiences as Audrey in Little Shop of Horrors, as Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, and as the Narrator in Joseph. Matthew Dunster directs Shirley Valentine. The show is designed by Paul Wills, with lighting design by Lucy Carter and sound design by Ian Dickinson for Autograph. If you fancy being cheered up in 2023, this is the show for you.
