This brilliant piece of theatrical genius is for adults only. And it's not for the faint hearted either. It's about The Nether, a digital destination where anything goes and users enjoy complete freedom. An innovative digital playground, it's where adults go for total sensory immersion. All you do is log in, pick an identity and you're free to indulge your every desire.
If that sounds dodgy, it is. Very dodgy indeed. When a young detective uncovers a particularly disturbing brand of so-called 'entertainment' involving child abuse, she kicks off a deeply nasty interrogation into the darkest corners of the human imagination. A fast paced first-person piece, the end result is an urban gaming experience which forces people to make instant life-saving decisions in a highly unforgiving environment. Thank goodness it isn't real... yet.
The show won the coveted 2012 Susan Smith Blackburn Prize. It's an intricate crime drama but it's also a memorable scifi thriller which explores what happens when people's dreams are turned into reality. Morals blur, the meaning of reality changes and it looks hard at the consequences of making dreams a reality. If you're interested in the disturbing morality of virtual paedophilia, this thought-provoking play is for you.
